
The growth of your own herbs is easy once you know how, and can add color and scent to your garden or window sill all year. Ceri Thomas, editor of Which? Gardening gives advice on dealers and suppliers, and all they need to grow to three of the most popular herbs basil, cilantro and rosemary.
Herbs Supermarket
Many common kitchen herbs are now available in supermarkets as potted plants, but can be difficult to follow. However, most of them, such as basil, cilantro and parsley, are actually a collection of crowded seedlings in the pot instead of a single plant established. You can use this to their advantage and may be an easy and convenient way to get a lot of grass plants. Just separate the individual plants, and re-pot separately.
Growth of the seed is the cheapest method for annual herbs. Chop the parsley, cilantro and chives to 5 cm from the base before returning to the pots, and separated from the person re-pot seedlings, each in its own container. Be careful to divide cilantro, parsley and basil, all of which resent having their roots disturbed. If basil has become leggy, you can return to the ground more deeply to encourage more growth.
How to Grow basil
You can begin planting basil in late March in a greenhouse or a sunny windowsill. It is very sensitive to cold and turn black at the slightest hint of frost, so make sure your early plantings are protected. Once the young plants reach about 15 cm high, remove the shoot tip to encourage more leafy growth and a bushier plant. When the heat of June arrives, you can sow another batch out and move houseplants outside to the patio. A planting end in August to give fresh basil in the fall.
Alternatively, you can buy in positions of basil at the supermarket or garden center. Seek bushy plants with lots of side shoots and no sign of flowering. You can then make more plants from cuttings.
Keep basil in the sunniest place you can find – preferably a south-facing window or in the yard, once there is no risk of frost. Water and remove flower spikes — if it is allowed to mature, your plants will stop growing new leaves.
Individual leaves the top of the plant and feeding with a liquid fertilizer later. Then let it grow again. If you find you have an abundant harvest in late summer, pick up the lot and turn it into pesto. It freezes very well if left Parmesan, which may be added before use.
Recommended varieties of basil
Basil, often sold as 'Sweet Genovese' has classic basil flavor. Greek basil is compact and dense with small leaves, so there is no need to cut before cooking. 'Green flying' is a classic basil flavor with a texture of curly leaves, while 'Thai basil is spicy and hot.
'Cinnamon Basil' has a flavor well as sweet anise, or try a fresh lemon flavor Mrs. Burns 'Lemon'. For use on windows or ornamental beds edges, try 'Purple Ruffles' to his wrinkled purple leaves.
How to Grow cilantro
Cilantro does not like being moved, so it is best planted in you want to grow, either in soil or in containers. Sow in late spring or early summer, and in August a little more planting in pots on the windowsill of the window of delivery in the autumn and winter. Well-drained soils in a sunny spot is essential for growing cilantro, and if you are growing in the interior of a window, give plenty of light and not over water.
Cilantro is quick annoying flowers and seeds before the road has been long, so it is best to plant little and often. Beware the thin, feathery leaves – a sure sign that the plants are about to bloom.
Keep mature leaves choose how and when you need them. Regular cultivation should be delayed flowering, but once the plants do flower, allow them to set seed. The seed is ripe when it stops unpleasant odor. Collect and use in the kitchen, keeping some plant other crops.
Recommended varieties of coriander
If you want the left choose 'Cilantro' and 'Leisure', which are slow to form seeds. In the case of seeds you are looking to go from Moroccan coriander.
How to grow rosemary
Rosemary is widely available in existing plants in garden centers for planting in spring. For more plants, taking cuttings of shoots young in spring or summer. Rosemary is slightly tender and needs a sunny, protected in a well-drained soil that does well in limestone soils. If you're growing in a container, add some grain to the payment of aid drainage and not by water. After flowering in March, adjustment in the way and feed.
You can pick up round leaves of this evergreen throughout the year. It's a good idea to dry some leaves in late summer if you use a lot of rosemary in the winter, or add a sprig of olive oil for salad dressings.
Recommended varieties of rosemary
The common rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is the most resistant and most used in the kitchen. 'Miss Jessopp upright variety is more vigorous and upright and is a good focal point in a bed of herbs. Prostratus Group are forms increasingly low, ideal for the top of a wall or rock garden. Corsican rosemary has a more pungent aroma.
